Hurricane Harvey is one of the major hurricanes in the United States. In a four-day period, many areas received more than 1000 mm of rain which caused catastrophic flooding. Many people have lost their homes and more than 30,000 people are affected by the flooding.
After a major natural disaster, it is common that people receive e-mails asking for donations to help the victims. Many non-profit organizations reach out to all their contacts to seek help to raise funds. It is same in case of Hurricane Harvey.
It has been observed that hackers are sending out fraudulent emails with the content relevant to Hurricane Harvey. Fraudulent emails will often contain links or attachments that direct users to infected websites and can lead to phishing.
US-CERT (United States – Computer Emergency Readiness Team) warns users to remain vigilant for malicious cyber activity seeking to capitalize on interest in Hurricane Harvey.
